HAZPREV providing renewable giants Vestas with their first aid, fire safety and emergency response equipment for all UK projects 2025

Over the past few years, HAZPREV have provided a range of equipment for renewable energy giants Vestas. The procurement team approached HAZPREV with an issue of supplying all of their first aid equipment, fire safety equipment and emergency response equipment for all of the UK onshore construction sites.

Together with the HAZPREV and Vestas team, we created a tailored list of all the essential equipment that would be required in both the site compound area during the installation phase of the project as well as complying with the UK regulations of which safety equipment should be stored permanently within the turbine once it had been erected and was fully functional.

This article explores the kind of equipment provided, explaining the function for each and how it was used in real life working environments to protect the workforce on the projects.

The Importance of First Aid and Emergency Response Equipment on Wind Farm Construction Sites

As the renewable energy sector continues to expand, wind farm construction sites are becoming more common across remote and rugged landscapes. While these sites are pivotal for sustainable energy, they also present unique safety challenges. Ensuring the health and safety of workers in such environments is not just a legal obligation but a moral imperative. At the core of this commitment is the availability and proper use of first aid and emergency response equipment.

Why First Aid and Emergency Equipment Matters

Key Reasons First Aid is Essential:

  • Remote Locations: Wind farms are often far from hospitals and emergency services.
  • High-Risk Tasks: Workers are exposed to risks from heights, electrical equipment, and weather.
  • Time-Critical Response: In emergencies like falls, electrocution, or cardiac arrest, immediate response is vital.

Essential First Aid Equipment on Wind Farm Sites

A well-equipped first aid kit on a wind farm construction site should include more than just bandages and antiseptics. Here's what’s typically required:

1. Comprehensive First Aid Kits

  • Burn dressings, trauma pads, eye wash
  • Bandages, splints, antiseptics
  • CPR mask, gloves, scissors

2. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

  • Critical for cardiac emergencies
  • Easy to use with audio and visual guidance

3. Eyewash Stations

  • Important in dusty and chemical-handling environments
  • Portable units for off-grid use

4. Fire Extinguishers and Fire Blankets

  • Special attention to electrical and mechanical fire risks
  • Should be easily accessible across the site

5. Rescue Kits for Working at Height

  • Harnesses, ropes, and rescue stretchers
  • Winch systems for confined space rescue

6. Rescue Stretchers and Rigid Spine Boards

  • Incase of emergency requiring helicopter rescue, we provide stretchers with slings attached
  • Rigid Spineboard incase of serious spinal injuries requiring body to remain straight

Use of these on UK Wind Farms and within the Turbines

HAZPREV worked with our client to provide their safety requirements needed when in the construction phase, for the site compound where the manpower was over 100 at times we provided: first aid kits, eyewash kits and stations, fire extinguishers (powder, co2, wet), fire blankets, spill containment kits, spill bins, burns kits, defibrillators, stretchers, cervical collars.

Also, when the turbine had been fully erected there was a requirement of safety equipment to be included both in the base of the turbine and in the nacelle where most of the works took place. Within the turbine was:

  • 2x CO2 Fire Extingusihers
  • 2x First Aid Kits
  • 2x Eyewash Stations
  • 2x Burns Kits
  • Rescue Kit

Site Compound

First Aid Kit set up at the site compound including all necessary equipment, the stretchers were kept in another location but should also be included.

Within the Turbines

To comply with their safety regulations, we provided high quality first aid kits, eyewash kits, fire blankets and co2 extinguishers in each of the turbines on the site.
